Living Wage Employer

Knights, a family-run company, who are shortly to celebrate the milestone of 50 years in business, are delighted to announce something else of which they can feel justifiably proud. They are now an Accredited Living Wage Employer.

The Stockport based business specialises in providing workwear and PPE with outstanding service and throughout five decades, has been dedicated to a mission of keeping its customers safe and smart.

Managing Director Steve Knight believes that focus and commitment, combined with a clear sense of the company’s values, has contributed to the success of the organisation, customer loyalty and a great team spirit. He told us that the Knights’ story is proof that a business can succeed whilst remaining responsible and fair.

Now, sharing the news of their Accreditation, the company aims to raise awareness of the work of the Living Wage Foundation and its aims. By law, employers must pay employees under 21 at least a specified Minimum Wage. For employees over 21, employers must now pay the so-called National Living Wage. However, these protections are insufficient to guarantee a full-time worker can enjoy a basic but decent standard of living. It’s important to note that the Living Wage Foundation’s rate is the only UK wage rate based on the true cost of living. It is the “Real Living Wage”.

Accredited employers – and the movement now has over 14,000 of these – undertake to pay a minimum of this Real Living Wage rate to all their directly employed staff, but it isn’t just the employees who benefit. As Steve Knight told us, businesses that respect and care for their staff always do better in the long run. He said, “We’ve always believed in fairness but in that, we’re not unique. More and more people want to do business with organisations that have high standards and believe in doing the right thing.”
